Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird

The Lockheed SR-71 was an advanced, long-range, Mach 3 strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed from the Lockheed A-12 and YF-12A aircraft by the Lockheed Skunk Works. The SR-71 was unofficially named the Blackbird, and called the Habu by its crews. Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was responsible for many of the design's innovative concepts. A defensive feature of the aircraft was its high speed and operating altitude, whereby, if a surface-to-air missile launch were detected, standard evasive action was simply to accelerate. The SR-71 line was in service from 1964 to 1998, with 12 of the 32 aircraft being destroyed in accidents, though none were lost to enemy action.

Plane went what 2000 mph. So crazy....cost a lot of money to fly one of those

Gregg hatfield

Hard to believe - that bird is from the 60s

Battenkill Rambler

Watched one of these take off from up close on Kadena AFB in '86. One of the most memorable things I've ever seen in my life. There are simply no words to describe how fantastic this thing was.

Efrain Rodriguez

This was a great plane I saw when I was in the USAF in Japan in 1970 & was told that the plane flew in less than 5 hours to USA.

Sam Fisher

The most beautiful plane to ever grace the atmosphere imo

John Stalvern

If donald trump doesnt allow the president of bugatti to buy this planes SR-71 BLACKBIRD...america banned from bugatti

Stanley Rakoski

Speed check

hitokiri1100

So the plane is Soviet because of Titanium 😆

Chris Mccrory

Should have had a nazi signs on it was them that designed it

lion king

Leaking fuel tanks? Was that a known issue in the planes design?

Joseph Charles

Hmm. So titanium is mined in the USSR, bought by the CIA and exported to the US, where it’s turned into the SR-71, and finally sent to spy on the USSR? Come on, that is so awesome.

Allen Des coteaux

The AVRO Arrow was just as remarkable

michael tipton

If you should find yourself in Seattle please go to the museum of flight. They have one there!

Chazman Chazman

Alsome Doco it was history in the making.

mrmonte51jm

There are "Aircraft" and "Airplanes", the SR-71 is an Aiplane !! An "Aiplane" is that which the body is designed to ALSO provide part of the "Lift" for flight...which is easily seen on this beautiful and graceful lady of the skies !!

domiflichi

Incredible

302hobronco

I had so many models of this plane. Still so iconic. Is there any place to see one up close??

Kevin Brooke

I read that when the SR71 was retired they flew one to the aviation museum. On it's way it broke several aviation speed records set previous by itself. The records still officially stand to this day. They dont build em like that anymore

In my country tomorrow is tomorrow nothing is change just a years old.

If this was the technology back then, just imagine what it is like now....

THE SR BB IS THE WAY TO SHOW M C' SQUARE HAD MEANING BUT WAS MISSED.

tHE FASTER YOU GO THE HEAVIER YOU " A" R" E" AND THE HOTTER YOU GET.

I WAS DESIGNING A ERGY FUEL IGNITION ENGINE BUT AS WE KNOW IT AT THIS TIME,

THE COMPOUNDS NEEDED TO JUST HOLD THE THRUST OF THE ENGINE OR TO PROTECT

FROM ENGINE YAWE IS NOT EVEN CONCEIVABLE AT THIS POINT IN TIME.

.AND AS OUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE IS BEING ERODED TERMINOLOGY AND CONVERSATION

WILL SOON BE IN A SMALL GROUP OF DESIGNERS AND INVENTORS SOON TO BE RETIRING

TO THEIR GRAVE.

i JUST WONDER HOW MUCH IS WORTH LOOSING SO MUCH TO THOSE WHO ARE WILLING TO

INVEST TO HOLDING THE LINE AND INTEGRITY TO RULES LAWS AND ETHICS.

THERE WAS A TIME WHEN THE INVENTORS WAS PROTECTED BUT NOT ANY MORE.

Kit Levey

Kelly Johnson remains the Grand and Exalted High Wizard of engineering in his time. He had some of the best and most creative engineering masters with him at the time but in the end they were all 'students of possibilities' under Kelly Johnson.

Only USA ..God bless all American and America

Corazon Sierra

look kids old footage from before widescreen... people used to think this was normal.

I Drone

The marriage requirement was most likely because if a paid-off pilot flew the plane off into a foreign enemy's hands- the CIA would (most likely) make the wife and kids disappear too...and kids were also probably required under the wife but was not mentioned for obvious reasons-in fact, every pilot had kids. Coincidence? Don't bet on it.

The Truth

So what the USA cannot make titanium?

Alex Waters

“Burnt hotdog oxide” what a wanker 😂

Rafa v

in an interview with an sr-71 pilot, he said the fuel leaking thing they mentioned here is BS. It didnt leak so much fuel that it had to refuel immediately after. There was a specified drip rate that was deemed acceptable, so a number of drips per minute, that varied by tank. If it exceeded this they would have to reseal the tanks or some other maintenance he mentioned. Its not like they were filling up the plane and it all just leaked onto the ground instantly. They started taking off with half a tank on purpose for other reasons, hence the refueling.

one of the reasons why im starting to hate these "documentaries" on technology. So much is sensationalised rubbish. It would be much more interesting if they turned down the music a bit and actually explained what happened accurately. The machine is out of this world, you dont have to add BS to make it more interesting. If youre interested in this stuff take a listen to the over one hour long interview with an SR-71 pilot here on youtu

Michael Ross Pearson

A not so perfect plane as they are trying to make out, 12 being lost in crashes.

l337dupowerspin

If they were put out of service, can I rummage for o e at Army surplus stores? (Or will that be Air Force surplus stores?)

stripervince1

I lived in palmdale in the 1980s and saw these all the time. Once out In the desert near 70th St E, one flew over my head maybe 200 ft rip roaring from plant 42. Amazing . The only cooler aircraft is the space shuttle, which makes this plane look like a snail....lol

David C'Kearney

Yep, I Work'd For A Living.

The harder I work, the hotter I get. Without Air & Water. Cool Water. I would fall flat on my Face. WTF~OVER?

Reality NotFiction

@4:15 - why do the pilots need to be married? because they work for the deep state and know you will not talk since your loved ones are on the line? hmmm very odd to me

BigErn_Mccraken

“They must be married.” Yeah, because if you can learn to deal with a nagging wife, you can handle just about anything.

Simon Watts

America ... fuck yeah !!

How can you not like this clip

In 1971 i was sent to Beale just out of boot camp. Walked the pavement out side the secret hangers of the SR’s. (SP) Here nearly 45 years later they still amaze me

e james

DIDN'T THE SR-71 FLY OUT OF.............."AREA 51"?

madscientist 666

Even compared b2 stealth, i still love this plane

DONALD TRUMP

What a machine

Alfredo Tirado

My car has a 25’ turning radius and it doesn’t overheat so it beats the SR71 in these two B2 specs.

Diego Alejandro Ramirez Farfan

Is the area 51
