Building The Ultimate Camper Van as a Tiny Home & Office on Wheels

46915 views

We've been working pretty much 7 days a week on building our DIY camper van in a Ford Transit with a high roof. We're planning a super functional home and office space in here, and are building it with as many natural materials as possible (cork, hemp, and FSC & formaldehyde-free plywood).

We're going to have a semi-permanent bed with adjustable backrest and seating where we can work on our laptops. We'll have a kitchen with running water, a small fridge, and a butane cooktop.

For our electricity, we're going to be using Inergy's Kodiak (disclaimer: they sent it to us to try and we love it so far. It's the only item in our van that was given to us. The rest we bought with our own money).

The solar power system will power our lights, fridge, roof vent, laptops, and other small electronics.

We're also going to have a tiny stall behind the driver's seat with a dry toilet in it, and will also be installing a heater under the passenger seat. Stay tuned for a full tour when we're d...

Older video I just found..i have a mini transit, wish all you guys that post these great ideas on builds would include dimensions, I can build but sure need "figures" instead of guessing,

How long is your van? 19 ft?

Brett Bradbeer

Great little van and it's looking good hope you have many great adventures in it ๐Ÿ˜‰โค๏ธ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ

Did they ever post the end product video??

Mark Kobernick

I did not see a vapor barrier over the insulation. That is a problem.

dansal2002

Looks good, insulation will give you mold issues though, next build you should opt for the square pink ones

Awesome van, much better for living in.

A GOOGLE USER

where did you get the lights and adapter ?

thanks

Greetings from Andy (pictured) and I in Orange County California. Was referred to your guys's Channel by watching the Amon and Bec video at the van meet up in Quebec. For you I have two questions...so far. ๐Ÿ˜„

1. From this video it looks like you guys built an interior wall straight up from the van floor why not why I'm not really trying to follow the van Wall Contours that much and then just insulated behind that wall. Did I observe that correctly?

That seems a little easier to me although I guess you would lose a few inches not following the Van Wall Contours so much.

And I do like the way you did the Box around the window. I'm going to need some small windows in my own conversion because I just can't live like I'm in a submarine. And I think you can have small windows and still look stealth-ish.

2. And do you have a tour of your completed van. Are more detailed build video. I didn't see it in the playlist.

Thanx

Michael

I have an all wood interior tiny home I just purchased....I'm searching and searching for an answer to this: do I need to seal the interior wood? It's wood paneling....everything.....or can I just leave it natural?

Would absolutely love to see videos on your build if you made them! My husband who is 6'4" and I are also wanting to convert a van with natural non-toxic materials and a high ceiling. Would love to know why you chose the van you did and also if there are comparable vans to it height wise. Thanks!

Fรฉlicitation pour votre nouveau projet j'hรขte de voir la finition totale

this is simply awesome!

Gabriel Parent-Leblanc

Wow, that's awesome guys! Can't wait to see the end result :D

I watched your kitchen video an loved the ideal of the foot pump. No one ever says that the electric pumps are so loud. Thank you for letting us know. I am planning on building a van home an was wondering if you could give me the demensions of the inside of your van. Height, length from back of drivers seat to back door an width please. Thanks. Looking forward to more of your build.

Luna Azul

Love it following ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŒน

Eudora Evans

Yay!

raboox9

How much added weight did you get? All that wood framing must be heavy. I'm wondering if it's possible to use lightweight materials instead.

What insulation did you use? Those look like some kind of matting.

This Nomadic Idea

Very cool. Hope things work out on the build. It takes awhile for sure. We are in the reno process ourselves. Big fans of your channel. Finally subscribed.

Amazing for the size it is :)

Cliff P.

I'm happy to see your back and excited to see your end result. Your build out looks really interesting so far.

johnny bush

Danielle is ecstatic, Matt! Posting is secondary when quality conversion is being developed. AWESOME! ๐Ÿ˜‡

Roman Silva

good job guys, and what happend with the van.

Chuck The Person

Hemp insulation. Hope you don't end up with a mold problem. As some have mentioned .... I would have went with spray foam insulation ... no vapor barrier required as long as it is minimum 2". Good luck with the build.

Abdulmuti Asiri

Good luck ;)

Fandi Hidayat

have you done your ultimate van?

b k

I bet the finished product is going to be one of the best vans out there. Keep us posted ๐Ÿ˜Ž

manderse12

Mat & Danielle, this looks like it's going to be a great project. I can't wait to watch your other videos on this. My son Soren and I just recently (last Saturday) attended a VanLife meetup in Portland, Oregon organized by the Minimal Millennials (Christian and Aubrey) and Eamon & Bec. About 10 other vans were there besides theirs. What an inspiration! Keep up the good work. I've been sharing your channel with friends and so admire your vision and dedication. Cheers. --Michael

Pinka Almira Kusuma

Hi guys! Finally we got the sneak peek of your camper van! This is so excited :D I can't wait for the next update. If possible, could you guys also share challenges/difficulties that you've got during building the van? Anyway, thanks for sharing this video :) Cheers!

Annie GoGoGone

Wow, looks amazing. Canโ€™t wait to see the finished product!

budschastliv

This is super cool work! Good for you!

Why all the wood? If something catches on fire youโ€™re dead

You said the floor space was slightly larger in this van than in your old van, but it looks like the old van is wider than this one. It's been my perception...I don't know the numbers...that the newer vans are more narrow than say a 1995 Chevy or Ford and have not entertained the idea of a new van conversion for that reason. Can anyone confirm this? And if so, why are they making them more narrow? And does it follow that the wheel base is proportionately more narrow? Thanks!

TheDenisedrake

How exciting!!!
