Safety First In Your Business Building

November 25, 2009 Filed Under: Business Appliances

Fires can break out at any given moment, for numerous reasons and in any building that you may be in. Unfortunately there are situations involving fires where exit signs are not properly placed or easily visible, that can make finding your way outside difficult. Doors, windows and even fire exits can be blocked or locked. So knowing what to do in a fire situation and how to get out of the building quickly and with as little panic as possible, is fundamental to making sure you exit the building safely.

Fire safety is very important to all buildings both private homes and businesses, where statistics show that much of the tragedy related to fire and carbon monoxide poisoning could have been avoided simply by being prepared with the proper equipment. Read your property fire insurance policy terms and conditions and make sure you fulfil those terms regarding fire prevention and fire equipment.

Exit Signs:

If you have a business property, make sure that exit signs are placed in clearly visible areas, where they can be easily seen by all who visit your business premises. Exit signs are manufactured in various sizes and colours and made of numerous materials. Text is LED and can be delivered in braille also with the text large so that people can see it from a distance. Many battery driven exit signs have a battery backup.

Alternative Exit Routes:

One of the principal errors that can be made is not having more than a single way in and out of a building. Alternative exits routes both in and out should not be blocked, locked or impassable.

Smoke Detectors, Fire Alarms and Sprinklers:

Make sure your smoke detectors are placed according to fire regulations as well as fire insurance policy terms and of course should function properly. Smoke alarms are fitted with a test button so it’s easy to test to see if they are working and fit with new batteries regularly.

Smoke detectors are inexpensive and are required by law and fulfill the terms of fire insurance. Be sure to check codes and regulations before you buy your smoke detector as some codes require specific types of detectors.

If you have a sprinkler system, this also needs to be inspected, tested and maintained regularly to insure they operate properly in the event of a fire. Sprinklers are activated by fire and work to keep the flames under control until the fire brigade arrive.

Make sure you put safety first in your business or home property.
