Identity Theft – 6 Easy Steps To Reduce Risk Of Identity Theft

December 1, 2009 Filed Under: Identity Theft

Everyone is at risk of becoming an identity theft victim. However, there are easy things you can do to reduce your exposure. Here are 6 tips that may help.

1-Review your driving record:

Aside from identity theft protection, it’s not a bad idea to view your driving record once in a while to see if it contains any errors. There shouldn’t be anything there that you are not aware of. If something is there, it could be that someone has your drivers license information. This could mean higher insurance along with identity theft. Your insurance company view your record from time to time, shouldn’t you?

2) Delete, delete, delete…all personal information from any computer that you plan to discard. Take out the hard drive from the computer that you are going to discard, and take a hammer to it.

3) Keep The Information On Your Checks To The Minimum Required:

Do not use your full name on your checks, instead the initials of your first and middle name. Your checks pass through a virtual highway of people who have access to the information on your checks. Never put your social security number on your checks.

Secure Your Mailbox

Because of the personal information contained in your mailbox, it is a high priority target for identity thieves. A new mailbox with a lock these days is a must.

5) Your Trash Bin Is A Target Of Identity Thieves, Be Careful What You Throw In It.

Tear up or use scissors with anything that contains private information before discarding into your trash. Identity thieves will look for information in your trash. Even junk mail is a source of information for them, so use caution here.

An Identity Theft Protection Program Is A Must Have:

Identity Theft Shield by Prepaid Legal and The Lifelock company will monitor your credit and alert you to any unauthorized activity. Identity Theft Shield will also help restore your credit and name if you ever become a victim. Well worth their low monthly fee.

Put into place the ideas you’ve just read about.

Be proactive and use the information you just learned.
